Football on grass - University of Stirling Football Club

Welcome to the home of Stirling University Football Club, where students, staff, alumni and supporters can keep up-to-date with all the action on and off the football field.

The University has five men's teams, comprising around 100 players, who compete in both British University competitions and in amateur and senior leagues across Scotland. In 2008, the first team joined the East of Scotland Football Association, competing in the First Division and in season 2009/10, they secured promotion to the Premier Division.

Home matches and training is on campus, where the students benefit from world-class facilities including seven grass pitches, two artificial pitches and a state-of-the-art fitness centre. On top of five dedicated coaches, the club benefits from strength and conditioning and physio support.

And in a unique partnership with Falkirk FC, the University now offers talented players the opportunity to combine their study with high performance football through the Craig Gowans football scholarships.

Stirling University FC 1-0 Spartans FC
Central Taxis East of Scotland Premier Division

By Stuart Kenny

A single goal separates the top two sides with one game to go in the East of Scotland Premier Division after Stirling University FC closed the gap on league leaders Spartans.

Midfielder Creag Robertson’s bullet header brought the students level on points with the reigning champions Spartans, who carry the slenderest of leads into a nerve-shredding final match of the season.

Trailing by goal difference, but with six more in the goals scored column, Stirling need to better the Spartans result to claim a first ever Premier Division title.

Stirling finish away to Vale of Leithen on Friday (18 May) hoping to replicate the same free-scoring form which saw them net five in the home encounter back in March.

But while Spartans have a week to prepare for their last match, away to third-placed Whitehill Welfare, the students are also in action on Tuesday (15 May) bidding to beat Leith Athletic in the King Cup Semi-Final to set up another showdown with Spartans.

Victory against the University would have seen Spartans win the league and the importance of the match was clearly impacting upon the play early on, with nervousness leading to misplaced passes and strong challenges.

Whoever managed the pressure best was likely to come out on top and it was the University that calmed themselves first, threatening through attacker Paul Sludden.

A long ball to Chris Geddes caught the Spartans’ defence off guard and he picked out his strike partner, but Sludden’s side-footed effort flew narrowly over the bar. Spartans keeper Chris Flockhart had to look lively to divert a Liam Corr shot out for a corner as the students upped the ante.

Then on 26 minutes, the breakthrough came. Sludden lofted a corner into the box, where Robertson, pictured, rose to power a header into the top left corner.

Spartans had the final chance of the first-half when Robbie Manson struck an optimistic volley from outside the box, but the striker’s effort flew narrowly passed the post.

The University returned from the break looking purposeful, substitute Danny Denholm coming close with a pop from long range.

Two chances then fell to Spartans as first Dean Hoskins hit a powerful effort from the left edge of the box just wide, then Chris Anderson broke through on goal, only to be denied by a top class tackle by defender Jason Atkins.

Hoskins fluffed another chance late on, the left-back missing the target from ten yards. And after Manson received a second yellow card, Stirling used their man advantage to full effect, control the remaining minutes of the match.

Stirling coach Gordon Dick said: “We knew we needed to win the game and we did it. It was a tremendous header from Creag and a massive win for the boys. They’ve played eight games in 17 days and they’ve been phenomenal.

“It is the first situation where the University has had a team in the British Universities Championship Final and now we are vying to win a first Premier league title. The whole University is proud of them.”

With the SFL League season now over, Stirling football fans are urged to head to Victoria Park, Innerleithen, EH44 6LP on Friday (18 May) for the final league match against Vale of Leithen, kick-off 7.30pm.

The King Cup Semi-Final against Leith Athletic takes place on Tuesday (15 May), kick-off 7pm at Edinburgh’s Telford College sports ground.

Background to Football at the University Stirling University FC 1976

The University of Stirling was founded in 1967.  A Sports Union was established in 1969 and one of its founding members was the Association Football Club.  The Club is typical of most Scottish university football clubs – it participates in competitions for students on Wednesday afternoons and local and regional non-student competitions at weekends.

Inter University Football

Initially, Stirling entered two teams in mid-week student competitions.  This grew to three teams in the 1980s and four teams by the late 1990s.  The Queen’s Park Shield is the most prestigious prize in student football in Scotland.  This competition was established in 1921 when Queen’s Park Football Club, realising the value of universities as potential recruiting grounds, presented a large silver shield to the Scottish Universities’ Football Association for an annual competition.  The front of the shield is solid silver.  It contains an engraving of Hampden Park as it was in 1921 and is surrounded by the crests of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews Universities, with a figurine of a player wearing a Queen’s Park strip standing above.  Stirling’s successes in the competition are listed below.

Scottish Combined Reserve League
Stirling University 1983 in action

The Club’s initial participation in non-student football was in 1971-2 in the Scottish Combined Reserve League.  This consisted of reserve teams of Second Division clubs and top amateur clubs.  St Mirren A, Queen’s Park Strollers, Queen of the South, Dumbarton A, Jordanhill Training College, Glasgow University and Drumchapel Amateurs were the clubs in this league.  John Lambie, at that time a player with St Johnstone, coached the team.  He previously played for Falkirk and went on to manage Hamilton Academical, Partick Thistle and Falkirk.  The Combined Reserve League was not run the following season due to realignment of the Scottish professional leagues.

East of Scotland League

Several years later, Stirling applied unsuccessfully for membership of the East of Scotland League, consisting of clubs from Edinburgh and the Borders.   It re-applied successfully in 2008-9.

Caledonian LeagueStirling University FC 1999

The Club has been a member of the Caledonian League since its inception in 1983-4.  It has never won a competition.  However, it has won the League’s good conduct trophy on numerous occasions.

Stirling and District Amateur League

The Club entered the Stirling and District Amateur League in the late 1970s and won the Robertson Trophy in 1982-3.
