Department of Sports Studies

Research Degrees

MPhil and PhD research students in the Department of Sports Studies have the opportunity to work closely with two supervisors, while also mixing and exchanging ideas with other full-time and part-time graduate students from a variety of international backgrounds. In addition, students have the opportunity to meet with visiting international scholars who may be at Stirling in any given year.

 

Entrance Requirements

The entrance requirement is normally a good upper second class Honours degree or equivalent in a subject relevant to the field of study.

English Language Requirements


A proven ability to write in English at a high standard. Applicants whose first language is not English may need to take an approved English proficiency test.

RAE Rating

The Department of Sports Studies was ranked 1st in Scotland and 5th in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise with 85% of our research outputs classed as of international standard.

 

Research Proposal

Candidates should first approach Dr Galloway with their research idea. Under consultation, this will then be developed to a 2000 word formal proposal including a brief literature review to establish the need for the research and initial plans on how the research will be undertaken.

Funding

The Department does not offer scholarships but gives preference to its postgraduate students when allocating funds for part-time teaching and research assistance positions.

Modes of Study

PhD: 3 years full-time, 6 years part-time.
MPhil: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time.

Students may register for a research degree at any time throughout the year.
