University-funded PhD Studentships

The University of Stirling is pleased to offer over 50 Postgraduate Research Studentships commencing in Session 2010-11 for students undertaking research leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Sport in one of the University’s key research themes.

The Department of Sports Studies has recently benefitted from investment in research laboratory spaces and the appointment of two new Professors (Sport, Health and Exercise Science; and Sport Management).

Research within Sports Studies is focused in three major areas and the Department welcomes applications in each of these areas, as well as inter-disciplinary applications:

The three areas of research focus comprise:

Nutrition, Physical Activity and Health


The University has recently appointed Dr Kevin Tipton as Professor of Sport, Health & Exercise Science. His research focuses on examining means of increasing muscle anabolism in athletes and exercising individuals, as well as those populations that suffer from muscle loss.
Other staff working in this area undertake research on:
• nutrition and exercise metabolism in health and disease (Dr Stuart Galloway)
• physical activity and obesity in children (Dr Adrienne Hughes)
• neuromuscular function in health and disease (Dr Angus Hunter)
• clinical exercise physiology (Dr Pelly Koufaki)
• muscle function and ageing (Professor Giuseppe DeVito)


Sports Management and Policy


Research in this area is led by Professor Fred Coalter. His research interests focus on the claimed contributions of sport to various aspects of social policy and on the area of sport-in-development (working in Africa, India and Brazil).
Other staff working in this area undertake research on:
• Quality management and management and measurement of performance within Olympic Sport Organisations, the public sector and the not-for-profit sector in sport (Prof Leigh Robinson)
• sports finance and governance (Stephen Morrow)
• monitoring and evaluation (John Taylor)
• anti-doping policy and major events (Dr Paul Dimeo)
• coaching policy and practice (Alan Lynn)


Sports History and Culture


Research in this area is led by Professor Grant Jarvie. His research focuses on the role of sport in social and community development.

• Sport’s relationship with ethnicity, identity, race, religion and politics (Dr Joe Bradley)
• critical social and cultural studies of sport (Dr Irene Reid)
• history of doping and drug use (Dr Paul Dimeo)
• women in sports leadership and sport and charity (Dr Joyce Kay)

Other information

Our University Postgraduate Research Studentships offer full tuition fees at UK/EU rates, an annual stipend at UK Research Council rates (currently £13,489), and research expenses of £750 per year. They will be awarded through an open competition to full-time PhD students commencing their research programme in Session 2010-11.
