Research
I completed a PhD in 2003, funded by the British Heart Foundation, on the effect of physical activity counselling on promotion and maintenance of physical activity in phase IV cardiac rehabilitation. Following my PhD, I was employed as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Human Nutrition at Glasgow University, where I managed the Scottish Childhood Obesity Treatment Trial (SCOTT). This was a multi-centre randomised controlled trial funded by the Scottish Executive Health Department. I have also conducted several other studies relating to aspects of childhood obesity including; quality of life among obese children, physical activity and sedentary behaviour (measured with accelerometry) among obese children, evaluation of the B’Active programme for overweight primary school children in Glasgow (funded by the Big Lottery Fund) and a qualitative study of parental perspectives of the SCOTT treatments (funded by the Scottish Executive Health Department). All of these studies have been published in high quality specialist journals. My current research interests include prevention and treatment of childhood obesity, measuring sedentary behaviour and physical activity in obese adolescents and the effect of resistance training on insulin sensitivity in South Asian obese adolescent.
