About

Alan joined the Department in August 2007 from Strathclyde University where he was the UG Course Director for the Sport & Physical Activity programme. Prior to that he was Technical Director for Scottish Swimming. He is a member of the UK Coaching Standards Group and has been involved in developing the new UK Coaching Certificate Level 4 programme. Alan coaches swimming with local club Stirling ASC and is a coach education tutor for a number of NGB’s.
Teaching
From September 2008, Alan will be Course Co-ordinator for the new PG MSc Sports Coaching programme. In the 2008/09 academic session he will contribute to the following UG modules:
SPS912 – Introduction to Sports Studies
SPS913 - Issues and Concepts in Sports Studies
SPS9D5 – Development of Excellence in Sport
SPS9D8 - Sports Studies Dissertations
Research
Alan is currently studying for his PhD investigating “the construction of elite sports coaches”. Using a Personal Construct Theory approach based on the work of George Kelly - examining the recruitment, education and development pathways of high performance coaches and the implications of this for future coaching policy. He recently presented the findings of the PhD pilot study to an international coaching conference.
